AI Citation & AEO/GEO Terms

Key terms and definitions for AI citation tracking, Answer Engine Optimization, and Generative Engine Optimization.

This glossary covers the essential vocabulary of AI citation tracking, AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Select any term to read the full definition with related resources.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

The practice of optimizing content so that AI-powered search engines (like OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and Google AI) cite and reference it in their generated responses. AEO focuses on citation rates, citation accuracy, and brand visibility in AI answers rather than traditional search rankings.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

The practice of structuring content so AI engines can accurately extract, cite, and reference it. GEO techniques include structured data markup, evidence density optimization, question-format headings, and comparison tables. While AEO focuses on the goal (getting cited), GEO focuses on the method (content structure).

AI Citation

An instance where an AI engine mentions, references, or cites a brand, product, or piece of content in its generated response. AI citations can be direct (naming the brand) or indirect (describing its features without naming it). Citation tracking measures how often and how accurately AI engines cite your brand.

Answer Engine

An AI-powered search tool that generates direct, conversational answers to user questions instead of returning a list of links. Examples include OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity (Sonar), Grok, and Google AI Overviews. Answer engines synthesize information from multiple sources into a single response.

Citation Rate

The frequency at which an AI engine cites or mentions a brand in response to relevant prompts. Citation rate is a key AEO metric, measured as the percentage of relevant prompts that produce a citation for your brand. Higher citation rates indicate better AI visibility.

Citation Accuracy

How correctly an AI engine represents a brand's information when citing it. Accuracy measures whether AI-generated mentions reflect your actual product, pricing, and capabilities. Monitoring citation accuracy helps identify content gaps where your pages need clearer, more structured information for AI engines to extract.

Evidence Density

The ratio of verifiable, specific claims (statistics, data points, expert quotes, benchmarks) to total content on a page. Pages with higher evidence density are cited more frequently by AI engines because they provide concrete, extractable facts rather than opinions or generalizations.

Citation Gap

A prompt or topic area where a competitor is cited by AI engines but your brand is not. Citation gap analysis reveals content opportunities — topics where creating or optimizing content could increase your AI visibility. Similar to keyword gap analysis in traditional SEO.

Structured Data / JSON-LD

Machine-readable metadata added to web pages using the Schema.org vocabulary, typically in JSON-LD format. Structured data helps AI engines semantically understand page content and extract specific facts. Common schemas for AEO include FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Product, and Organization.

Answer Capsule

A bolded 1-2 sentence direct answer placed immediately after a question-format heading. Answer capsules are designed to be easily extracted by AI engines as citations. The pattern is: question heading → bold direct answer → supporting details.

AI Crawler

A web crawler operated by an AI company to index content for their models. Key AI crawlers include GPTBot (OpenAI), Anthropic-AI (Claude), Google-Extended (Gemini and Google AI), PerplexityBot (Sonar), and xAI crawler (Grok). Websites can allow or block these crawlers via robots.txt directives.

Brand Profile

The set of key information about your brand (name, product names, competitors, target prompts) configured in a citation tracking tool. Your brand profile defines what CiteRank monitors across AI engines — which prompts to track, which competitors to watch, and which brand terms to detect in AI-generated responses.

Citation Experiment

A controlled test that measures how a specific content change affects AI citation rates. The workflow is: capture baseline citations → make a content change → re-measure citations → compare results. Citation experiments provide data-driven evidence of what AEO/GEO optimizations actually work.

Page Optimization Score

A composite score measuring how well a page is optimized for AI citation. Factors include evidence density, structured data coverage, content structure, heading format, and topical authority signals. Used to prioritize which pages to optimize first.

Content Intelligence

A category of AEO tools that help discover optimization opportunities: prompt reverse-engineering (finding which queries should surface your brand), competitive gap analysis (where competitors are cited and you aren't), cross-engine citation diffs, and crawl simulation.
