Citation Gap

Citation Gap A prompt or topic area where a competitor is cited by AI engines but your brand is not. Citation gap analysis reveals content opportunities — topics where creating or optimizing content could increase your AI visibility. Similar to keyword gap analysis in traditional SEO.

Citation gaps are the AEO equivalent of keyword gaps in SEO. They represent missed opportunities where your competitors are being recommended by AI engines but you are not. For example, if a user asks OpenAI "What are the best email marketing tools?" and it mentions Mailchimp, ConvertKit, and HubSpot but not your email tool, that is a citation gap.

Closing citation gaps requires two steps: first, identify them through systematic prompt tracking across multiple AI engines. Second, create or optimize content that addresses the gap — adding structured data, increasing evidence density, and ensuring your page directly answers the type of question that triggered the gap. CiteRank's Content Intelligence feature automates gap detection with a competitive gap matrix.
