AI Citation

AI Citation An instance where an AI engine mentions, references, or cites a brand, product, or piece of content in its generated response. AI citations can be direct (naming the brand) or indirect (describing its features without naming it). Citation tracking measures how often and how accurately AI engines cite your brand.

AI citations are the currency of visibility in AI search. When a user asks OpenAI, Claude, or Perplexity a question about your industry, the AI generates a response that may mention specific brands, products, or sources. Each mention is an AI citation. Citations vary in quality: a direct citation names your brand explicitly, while an indirect citation describes your product without naming it.

Tracking AI citations is essential because unlike Google Search Console, AI engines provide no analytics dashboard. Without dedicated tracking, you have zero visibility into what millions of AI-generated responses say about your brand every week. CiteRank automates this by sending test prompts to multiple AI engines and analyzing each response for brand mentions, citations, and source links.
